5 Trends Every CIO Should Know About

In this rapidly changing global economy, the role of the Chief Information Officer is more crucial than ever before. One of the toughest challenges CIOs tackle is anticipating and adapting to current and future ICT trends, so that the business remains ahead of the curve. Read below for 5 trends that all CIOs should be across.

1. The CIO's role description has changed

It wasn't so long ago that the CIO's main task was making sure the computers worked and the internet is connected. Today's CIO however takes a pivotal role in steering the direction of a company, enabling growth and efficiency by choosing, procuring and managing technology that improves productivity.

The CIO must constantly look for innovations that enable the company to be more nimble and response. The role is quickly changing to 'information manager'  - the one who facilitates information exchange in an organisation, as opposed to just managing the technology.

2. Aiming for maximum impact, rather than case-by-case

The IT professional of today needs to be across the latest game-changing technologies that can bring a wholesale benefit to the business. Without faster iterations of technological improvements, the business will be left behind by competitors who are more proactive.

3. Cost-cutting is being replaced by return on investment

Rather than continually looking at ways to cut costs, today's CIO needs to continually consider the bigger picture (i.e. return on investment). While businesses should be naturally cautious with expenditure, leading enterprises know that it's better to spend well and get a significant return, than it is to limit the business by cutting costs.

4. Increasing demand for insightful employee data

With a growing shift towards mobile and remote workforces, CIOs are being called upon to provide effective working tools for employees, as well as insights into their productivity. Many cloud-based task management applications and CRM systems offer comprehensive activity reporting, giving HR managers better vision into how each employee contributes to the business.

These applications can also help to pinpoint flagging employee engagement and attendance, giving HR the opportunity to proactively sort out issues before they become major problems.

5. Relying on Artificial Intelligence

By 2018, Gartner1 expects most of the world's largest 200 companies to be properly exploiting intelligent apps, as well as big data and analytical tools to refine their offers and improve their customer experience. As more and more applications are built with intuitive algorithms as part of their makeup, it is expected they will be called upon more frequently for automation and decision-making in the world's leading businesses.
