Are you ready for the upcoming 2G network shutdown?

There's a major technological event happening at the end of the year, and it will have a significant impact on businesses if they haven't taken steps to prepare for it.

Telstra will be switching off its 2G network on December 1. Optus will follow suit early in the new year. Vodafone has yet to announce its intentions, but it's a safe bet to assume they won't be far behind their rivals in consigning 2G to history.

Most people would have used the 2G network in the early days of mobile phone use, but the fraction of the population still using "dumb" phones as opposed to "smart" devices on the 3G and 4G networks would be small, and most likely non-existent in the business world.

Nevertheless 2G still has a healthy customer base - in the M2M (machine-to-machine) space.

It is estimated that up to 70 percent of the world's M2M networks use 2G, primarily because the light data loads of M2M traffic make it the cheapest option.

That consideration is now irrelevant. If an organisation hasn't upgraded their M2M network by December, their hardware could fall silent.

We can help

"Businesses utilising M2M who haven't prepared for the 2G shutdown are exposing themselves to major disruption," says Vita Enterprise Solutions' M2M manager, Jon Vlahos.

"There is still time to put in place a smooth transition, but that window is shrinking fast."

Vita Enterprise Solutions has formed a partnership with technology specialists AWA to help businesses upgrade their systems in preparation for the 2G blackout.

We can offer a complete suite of services to make the migration a seamless and cost-effective exercise, including field service; M2M hardware and staging; a M2M Managed Service; and a range of professional services designed to extract maximum value and productivity out of your network.

Our partnership with AWA allows us to deliver strong combined capabilities of experienced project management and technical skills. With a workforce of 250 staff and 700 agents we have the whole country covered, and our service centres in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart can provide field services, workshop and logistics to all metro and regional areas.

In a nutshell, we can deploy and support mission-critical information technology anywhere.

M2M Hardware and Staging

If your upgrade requires new hardware, we can work with you to make the right choice for your business, then customise it according to your needs.

Our secure staging facility allows us to deliver customised hardware setup and configuration services with the right software, antenna and cables shipped directly to customers.

Of course support is crucial, and our Helpdesk is available 24/7 to give our customers peace of mind.

Our machine-to-machine service is a managed solution for M2M applications that brings together hardware procurement, M2M SIM management, project management and reporting of services, device logistics and asset management into a tailored package.

There are many benefits to be gained by employing a M2M managed service, not the least being transparent cost control, increased productivity and freeing vital staff to concentrate on core activities.

Looking ahead

Once you have successfully migrated out of the 2G spectrum, there may be opportunities to extract new value from your upgraded network.

Our team of in-house developers can assist with system integration and software development, and we have a large team of qualified, experienced project managers to seamlessly execute projects from end to end.

"The closure of the 2G network is an opportunity for organisations to consider new ways of working in order to better serve their customers and make significant productivity gains," says Jon Vlahos."
